Up, up and away as, with Taffy’s help, I can officially launch and promote www.2cvgbparts.co.uk, the new SPOG Parts website. It was initially considered that this could be for Club Members only to view via a link/password from the 2cvGB website before ultimately going “Live to the World”. Consequently we could have had your feedback before going global, SPOG being owned by every one of you within the Club. However, even with modern day IT skills, this proved nigh on impossible, hence SPOG is now active on the World-Wide-Web.
Before I expand on where we would like to progress SPOG’s website, something has recently come up amid discussion at TROY club night where experiences with our cars are of top priority. Each individual club member can have problems with their vehicles but when folk get together, such as at a local group meeting, often a common theme appears when several folk say “I’ve had that”. And so I now turn to brake pedal switches common to all our cars.
These simple on/off switches mounted above the brake pedal mechanism work hard for their living. And with time, like everything else in life, they inevitably fail. Indeed I’ve had two such switches succumb over recent years with a fellow TROY member having to replace five on his vehicles. Also with my Acadiane, I’ve “blown” the 10 amp fuse applicable to the brake lights on this van on two separate occasions whilst participating in Club scenic drives. As one’s right foot hovers between the accelerator and the brake pedal trying not to lose sight of the vehicle in front I’ve found, much to the chagrin of the driver in the car behind , the brake lights suddenly disappear.
Therefore it does appear that the brake pedal switch and its electrical ramifications suffer on our cars with everyday use. But there’s more. I have even heard of late that new replacement brake pedal switches are allegedly not the quality of the Citroen original with some switches failing within months of purchase. “Not me” said Ken who fitted a relay to protect the brake pedal switch on his Dyane many years ago with no problem since.
I’ve brought up the subject of relays before and, love them or loath them, they do seem to work. In fact one of the TROY group is an MOT Tester for modern cars where up to thirty (or more) relay type systems are used to operate all things electrical such as door window opening motors, radio aerials, heated seats, door mirrors etc. etc. Why not the brake pedal switch on an A series vehicle? So yes I’ve started to do this on all my cars, my everyday ’81 drum-brake 2cv being the first one to receive such a 30 amp relay addition thereby enabling me to include a wiring diagram of my work. Indeed a close friend, who has similarly suffered from brake pedal switch failure, has even wired in a warning light from the switch to the dashboard as a “fail-safe”. Clever stuff eh?
Moving on … Drive It Day with fellow 2cvGB folk joining the York Historic Vehicle Group’s run from the Knavesmire to the Aero-Club‘s field in Sherburn-in-Elmet was a great success. Three 2cvs, two Dyanes, one Ami Super and a Mehari, the latter all the way from Hertfordshire in the line-up, thanks Emilio for your much appreciated support. The route took us across the newly re-built road bridge over the River Wharfe in Tadcaster … remember those horrid pictures of the Boxing Day Floods in Yorkshire over twelve months ago? This bridge being such an iconic structure these days, even the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire cycle race used it.
And then two of us braved the inclement May Day Bank Holiday weather to represent 2cvGB at the Ilkley Carnival and Classic Car Show. Being part of the so-called “entertainment”, one received a free pass to the rest of the event field. Next up of Classic Car interest is the Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor Club Ltd (please note the Ltd bit, we are not alone in what we’ve done) Show in the Hope Valley on Monday evening 12th June.

On the Club’s home page click on the title “What is SPOG” and the following page has a tool-bar across the top listing SPOG betwixt Forum and Shop. Click here and you’re “in”. Many of the photographs of the SPOG Parts which have appeared in 2cvGB News over the years are included to help with item identification. Plus recent SPOG Articles from the Club’s Magazine if there is something previously written that you wish to refer to.
